Truth or Lie

Saturday May 6

The darkness was all consuming as if every particle of light had been sucked out of the atmosphere. The moon was barely a sliver, its illumination lost in the clouds hanging across the sky. The only sounds were from the mourning doves tucked into their nests. London waited until the men were gone for the night, seeing no movement for more than four hours. They’d sat outside, drinking and talking loudly, likely telling stories of their past escapades. The three finally stumbled toward the farmhouse, gaits unsteady and voices unmodulated. Drunk or high. Either way, it works to my advantage. Less chance of someone out wandering at night. By eleven p.m., the farmhouse lights were out and the area devoid of man-made interruptions.

Her eyes now adjusted to the darkness, London crept slowly toward the shed she’d watched all day. Before they quit for the day, the men again secured both the U-Haul’s rollup door and the shed. Shiny aluminum locks were visible even in the minimal light. Creeping slowly around the perimeter of the shed, London noted two windows and the locked door. She preferred not to pick the lock. Stopping at the first window, she slid her small pry bar under the bottom of the window frame, nudging it to check if it would move. The give was subtle, but it was there. She moved the bar to the top of the frame, under where she suspected a lock might be located. Another gentle nudge and the window casing gave way, offering a small gap between it and the sill. In all the years she’d been gaining entry to establishments, London was amazed that people didn’t lock their windows.

Opening the window very slowly, she listened for creaks which might attract attention. She was confident the men she’d watched all day were passed out in the farmhouse, but London never ruled out unseen security measures. An abundance of caution ensured she never got caught. After watching the afternoon action, she was convinced there was something going on that either the men, or whomever they worked for, wanted kept secret. On the other hand, London’s boss wanted her to uncover that secret. Whatever, it wasn’t her worry. It was just a job.

With the window open enough for her to slide her six-foot frame through, London peered inside to clear a landing spot. There were boxes under the window but the floor was clear beyond that. With her size, she guessed she could step over the boxes without making noise. With the end of her flashlight still covered, London quickly double-checked her surroundings, then slipped inside.

The shed was filled with boxes and bins, stacked haphazardly in the small space. She saw four of the tall, slender plants as well as several empty pots but none of the shorter shrublike plants. Dirt covered the floor and the air had a humid, earthy smell. The dirt underfoot contained white flecks it held which she guessed were perlite. Footprints were everywhere so hers would blend in.
